NATO Secretary-General Rutte in Iceland

Mark Rutte, Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), visited Iceland Thursday. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, met Rutte upon arrival in Keflavík and after a bilateral meeting the Secretary-General was given a tour of the security area at Keflavík Air Base. The Secretary-General then took a helicopter trip with Minister Gunnarsdóttir over the Reykjanes peninsula which has seen repeated volcanic activity since 2021.

After landing in Reykjavík SG Rutte met with Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, as well as members of the Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi. Iceland is a founding member of NATO and plays a key role for the alliance in the North Atlantic.
